Alexandra Brandt

I am a nerd, an artist, and a general layabout. A daydreamer. A writer. I’m in love with things that are otherworldly and grand and a little bit magical. I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with my properly wild and wonderful writer husband, two horrible-yet-adorable cats, and a lot of mess. I get to write and design things for a living, but since it's for a medical practice, there's not much opportunity to write about swords and magic or superheroes. Hence my side projects, including nerdy fiction...and the blog, of course.

Writers: Watch Nanette

I originally was going to post a blog called “Information Flow and the Power of Stories,” but now I realize that really the only important thing is this: Hannah Gadsby’s one-hour show “Nanette” should be mandatory viewing for creatives, especially writers. Three reasons: One: It will make you a better […]

New Release and Winter Update

Well, hello there. You might have noticed it has been some time since the last blog post. I was dreadfully delinquent and didn’t even make a post when a bunch of my fiction came out this year. Because sometimes my brain is full of stories, and sometimes (read: more often) […]

Would you like to be haunted?

I’m in a story bundle! This is a first time for me and I can’t believe I am in such illustrious company. Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Dean Wesley Smith, Jaime Lee Moyer, Dayle A. Dermatis and more…a lot of personal favorite authors and new ones I just discovered. And they’re amazing! […]

New Fiction for Sale!

Well, it’s old fiction, actually. At least some of it. The point is, I finally have some of my stories up for sale as ebooks! One of them, “Sidewynd,” is the urban fantasy I wrote last year as an ode to Edinburgh, the love for which I haven’t even begun to […]

Fear of Failure

Oh, man. So much has happened since I last posted here. I SOLD TWO STORIES to Fiction River during the Anthology Workshop (which you, readers who are also my Facebook friends, of course already know about). I worked on a few new stories, though not as many as I wanted […]

Scotland Day 2: Mull & Iona

It’s BAAAAAAAAAAACK! Well, that was a longer break than I wanted to take. Apparently taking on roughly five major marketing projects and simultaneously losing the other half of one’s marketing team – all in one month – equals BAD. And 10-12 hour workdays. And then when the worst dies down, a […]

Hey Alex, Where’s the Blog?

I haven’t forgotten about Scotland, I promise! I’ve been writing stories. STORIES! I am very excited about this. It’s been a while. In fact, that is why I have a real live author photo now, as demonstrated above. So real. So author-y. (Warning: the rest of this post is just going to […]

Scotland Day 1: Oban

Given how sweltering it has been these past few days, I can’t help but look back on our Scotland pictures and sigh for the 45- to 65- degree, gray, sometimes-rainy weather we enjoyed for most of the trip. Who knew I’d miss having to wear a hat and jacket all […]

Scotland Day 0: Glasgow

I call this “Day Zero” because, while it took place in Scotland, it wasn’t actually part of the archaeology tour. It was just the four of us (Mom, Dad, Erik, and me) hanging out and exploring Glasgow while we waited for the last of our jet lag to work itself […]

Iceland: The Golden Circle

I realize it’s been a little while. All I can say is: 500 pictures. For day two alone. 500 huge RAW files and one very slooooooooow computer with which to process them. Do I sound like I’m whining? I’m totally whining. Also, THANKS, DAD. Stupid FANCIEST camera with stupid gigantic, […]
